My story

My name is Jaya Brees. I am A illustrator/artist born and raised in Milwaukee WI. A bit of a back story on my art journey. I started making art when my brother got into painting graffiti. I started taggin’ along for the fun. I never really got into the “letter” game as the graffiti writers call it. Stylized lettering with mathematical expertise all done with a spray can. I was more interested in painting from life. My dog was my muse. She’s a beautiful all black German Shepard. I wanted her face everywhere ! Started painting cartoon scenes of her, but I wanted more. I wanted her to be seen as she is. So, I tried to paint her as a photo. My first portrait turned out pretty good, and so it began. Soon I was panting dog portraits everywhere. Much attention to detail. That’s what I liked ! How well can I render this image without me losing a “ style “ or “ likeness” I also liked to portray.

After about a year of painting with spray-paint I ventured into other mediums as well. Charcoal sketching, acrylic, and oil painting. I don’t know what’s my favorite anymore. Usually flip flopping, I’ll finish a canvas painting for a few months, then go to spray-paint or a mural . I’ve come a long way for my short journey, Painting is my crutch in life. I can express myself and the things I enjoy through my paintings. Bringing a sense of classic nostalgia with a modern twist..
